How to Care for Nemesia

Nemesia (Nemesia strumosa) is a compact, floriferous flowering plant that produces dense clusters of small, colorful, often sweetly fragrant blooms. Loved for containers, window boxes, and border edging, it delivers a long show in cool weather and comes in a wide range of vivid and pastel shades.

Light

Grow in full sun to part shade. Full sun gives the fullest flowering in cool conditions, while light afternoon shade helps prolong bloom and prevents heat stress as temperatures climb. Adequate light keeps plants compact and well covered in flowers rather than sparse and leggy.

Water

Keep the soil evenly moist. Nemesia does not like to dry out completely, and drought stress causes it to fade, stop blooming, or collapse. At the same time, avoid waterlogging; aim for consistent, moderate moisture with good drainage. Container plants dry out faster and may need checking daily in warm, breezy weather.

Soil & Potting

Use rich, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Slightly acidic conditions suit it best. In pots, choose a quality potting mix and containers with drainage holes; adding a little compost supports its heavy flowering. Good drainage combined with steady moisture is the balance to strike.

Humidity & Temperature

Nemesia is a cool-season plant that flowers best in mild temperatures and struggles in intense heat, when blooming often stalls. It thrives in the cool of spring and fall, and in mild-winter climates through winter. It tolerates light coolness but is frost-sensitive. Average humidity is fine, though good airflow helps prevent disease in damp conditions.

Feeding

As a prolific bloomer, Nemesia benefits from regular feeding during the growing season. Apply a balanced or bloom-focused liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks for container plants, or work slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting. Consistent light feeding fuels continuous flowering, but avoid overdoing nitrogen, which favors foliage over blooms.

Propagation

Propagate from seed or cuttings. Sow seed indoors in cool conditions several weeks before setting out, barely covering the fine seed and keeping it moist and cool until it germinates. Named cultivars are propagated from soft stem cuttings taken from healthy, non-flowering shoots and rooted in moist mix. Cuttings preserve the exact flower color and habit.

Repotting / Pruning

Shear or pinch plants back by about a third when flowering slows or they grow leggy; this rejuvenation encourages a fresh flush of blooms and a bushier shape. Regular deadheading or light trimming keeps the display going. For container plantings, refresh soil or step up pot size if a plant becomes crowded and rootbound.

Common Problems & Pests

Common issues include stem and root rot in overly wet or poorly drained soil, powdery mildew and downy mildew in damp, crowded conditions, and pests such as aphids and spider mites, the latter especially in hot, dry spells. Provide good drainage, airflow, and consistent moisture to prevent most problems, and treat pests early with insecticidal soap. The biggest challenge is simply summer heat, which stalls flowering.

Seasonal Care Tips

Plant in early spring or in fall for cool-season color, and in mild climates enjoy winter bloom. Feed and water steadily through the flowering period, and shear back after the first big flush to spur more blooms. As summer heat arrives, move containers to a cooler, partly shaded spot or accept a bloom pause, and replant for a fresh fall display when temperatures ease.
