Flamingo Lily

Brief Description

An evergreen perennial known for its distinctive heart-shaped, glossy dark green leaves and bright, waxy spathes that look like flowers, featuring a prominent central spike called a spadix.

Care Instructions

Provide bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch leaves. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Use high phosphorus fertilizer during the growing season to encourage blooming.

Medicinal Value

We do not currently provide medicinal value for plant identifications.

Sunlight

Bright indirect light, 6-8 hours a day. Direct midday sun will burn the foliage, while too little light leads to fewer blooms.

Watering

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. It prefers high humidity and consistent moisture. Yellowing leaves often indicate over-watering, while wilting or brown tips suggest under-watering.

Soil

Well-draining, aerated organic mix such as orchid bark, peat moss, and perlite. Preferred pH is 5.5 to 6.5.

Hardiness Zone

USDA zones 11-12; it is highly sensitive to cold and should be kept above 60°F (15°C).

Growth Habit

Clumping herbaceous perennial that can reach 12-18 inches indoors. It has a slow to moderate growth rate.

Bloom Season

Can bloom throughout the year in ideal conditions, though most common in spring and summer. Flowers are tiny and located on the spadix, surrounded by a colorful spathe.

Toxicity

Highly toxic to humans, dogs, and cats if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals which cause intense mouth irritation, swelling, and digestive distress.

Propagation

Most easily propagated by division or stem cuttings with aerial roots attached during the spring.

Common Pests & Issues

Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and root rot if over-watered. Brown leaf edges often indicate low humidity.

Similar Species

Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) has similar leaves but thinner, white spathes. Calla Lilies have more funnel-shaped blooms and different leaf textures.

Interesting Facts

The 'flower' is actually a modified leaf called a spathe; their long-lasting nature makes them one of the most popular choices for cut flower arrangements globally.
