Epiphyllum (Orchid Cactus)

Brief Description

Epiphyllum, commonly known as Orchid Cactus, features long, flattened, leaf-like stems that are actually modified branches. These stems can be wavy or scalloped along the edges and are often bright green. Unlike typical cacti, they do not have prominent spines but may have small bristles along the edges. They are renowned for their large, showy, often fragrant flowers that bloom in a variety of colors, typically at night or in the evening.

Care Instructions

Epiphyllum thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct scorching sun. Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one formulated for epiphytic cacti or orchids, which should be rich in organic matter. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, reducing watering in winter. They prefer high humidity, so regular misting or placing them near a humidifier is beneficial. Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Protect from frost as they are not cold-hardy.
