River Birch

Scientific Name: Betula nigra

Plant Family: Betulaceae

Native Region: Eastern United States

River Birch

Brief Description

The leaf appears to be from a River Birch, characterized by its rhombic to ovate shape with a double-serrated margin and typically light green color. The veins are prominent and the base of the leaf is often wedge-shaped. The bark of a mature River Birch is distinctive, peeling in papery layers to reveal lighter, often salmon-colored inner bark.

Care Instructions

River Birches prefer moist, acidic, well-draining soils and full sun to partial shade. They are relatively low-maintenance once established, but benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Pruning can be done in late summer or early fall to avoid sap bleeding. They are generally resistant to common birch diseases, unlike some other birch species.
