Elephant Ear (Alocasia)

Brief Description

The plant appears to be a variety of Alocasia or Taro, characterized by large, heart-shaped or sagittate (arrowhead-shaped) leaves with prominent venation. The leaves are a vibrant green, potentially glossy, and are borne on long, sturdy petioles (leaf stalks) emerging from a central corm or rhizome visible at the base of the plant in the pot.

Care Instructions

Alocasia plants generally thrive in bright, indirect light. They prefer consistently moist but not waterlogged soil, so ensure good drainage. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again. High humidity is beneficial, so consider misting or using a pebble tray. They prefer warm temperatures, typically between 65-80°F (18-27°C) and should be protected from cold drafts. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Repot only when root-bound, usually every 1-2 years.
