Brief Description
Houttuynia cordata is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows to 20 to40 cm. tall. The stem is trailing and takes roots in the nodes. The basal leaves are heart-shaped, 4–10 cm long and 2.5–8 cmbroad. The leaves are often variegated with shades of red and yellow along the veins. The flowers are small, yellow-green, and are subtended by four large, white sessile bracts. The plant flowers from April to August. The fruits are capsules that contain several small seeds.
Care Instructions
Houttuynia cordata prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun or full shade. It thrives in moist to wet soil and can even grow in shallow water. It is a vigorous grower and can spread quickly through its underground rhizomes. It is best suited for areas where its spread can be contained, such as in a pond or bog garden, or in a container. It is resistant to most pests and diseases.
