Common Hazel is quite adaptable and low-maintenance. It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types from acidic to alkaline. It can grow in full sun to partial shade, though nut production is better in sunnier locations. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, until established. Pruning can be done in winter to remove dead or weak branches, or to coppice for hazel rods.
