Common Hazel

Brief Description

The Common Hazel is a deciduous shrub or small tree, typically growing to 3-8 meters tall, though it can reach 15 meters. It has rounded to broadly oval leaves, 6-12 cm long and 5-10 cm broad, with a serrated margin and a downy underside. Its branches are often flexible and somewhat arching.

Care Instructions

Common Hazel is quite adaptable and low-maintenance. It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types from acidic to alkaline. It can grow in full sun to partial shade, though nut production is better in sunnier locations. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, until established. Pruning can be done in winter to remove dead or weak branches, or to coppice for hazel rods.
