How to Care for Wood Betony

Wood Betony (Stachys officinalis) is a hardy, clump-forming perennial that forms neat rosettes of scalloped, deep-green leaves topped by upright spikes of reddish-purple flowers in summer. Easy-going and long-lived, it is a reliable choice for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic plantings.

Light

Wood Betony grows well in full sun to part shade. In cooler climates it flowers most freely in full sun, while in hotter regions a little afternoon shade keeps the foliage fresh and prevents scorching. It is versatile enough to fill both sunny borders and lightly dappled spots, though very deep shade reduces flowering and can make the plant floppy.

Water

Provide moderate, even moisture, keeping the soil consistently but not constantly wet. Water young plants regularly to establish them; once settled, Wood Betony tolerates short dry spells but performs best when the soil does not dry out completely. It dislikes both drought stress and waterlogged ground, so aim for steady moisture with good drainage.
