A fast-growing, small to medium-sized deciduous tree with alternate, heart-shaped leaves that can vary in shape from unlobed to deeply lobed. It produces pendulous, cylindrical catkins that develop into blackberry-like fruits which turn from green to white or purple as they ripen.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It is highly adaptable to various soil types and pH levels.
