Overview

Neon Pothos is a brightly colored cultivar of Epipremnum aureum, the same species as classic golden pothos, but with solid neon-yellow-green foliage instead of variegation. New leaves emerge the brightest, deepening slightly as they mature.

It shares the toughness that made pothos a beginner favorite: it tolerates low light, irregular watering, and average humidity, and trails or climbs vigorously. The luminous color brightens dim corners and pairs well with darker-leaved plants.

How to identify it

Recognize Neon Pothos by:

  • Leaves: Heart-shaped, smooth, and glossy, with a uniform neon chartreuse to yellow-green color and no variegation
  • New growth: The newest leaves are the brightest, almost lime-yellow
  • Stems: Trailing or climbing vines that can reach several feet
  • Habit: Cascades from baskets or climbs a moss pole with aerial roots
  • Size: Indoor vines commonly 4-6 feet or longer

Care & growing

  • Light: Bright indirect light keeps color vivid; tolerates lower light but growth slows and color dulls
  • Water: Water when the top inch of soil dries, roughly weekly; let it dry more in winter
  • Soil: Standard well-draining potting mix
  • Temperature: 65-85F (18-29C); avoid cold drafts
  • Feeding: Balanced houseplant fertilizer monthly in spring and summer
  • Propagation: Very easy from stem cuttings in water or soil; cut just below a node

Habitat & origin

The parent species Epipremnum aureum is native to French Polynesia (the Society Islands) and has naturalized in tropical forests worldwide, where it climbs tree trunks as a vigorous vine.

The 'Neon' cultivar is grown almost exclusively as an indoor houseplant globally, valued for thriving in typical home conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my new leaves less neon?

Bright indirect light produces the most vivid color. In low light, new growth comes in greener and the plant may get leggy.

How is it different from regular pothos?

It is the same species but a solid neon-green cultivar with no variegation, unlike golden or marble queen pothos.

How often should I water it?

Let the top inch of soil dry, then water thoroughly, usually about once a week. It tolerates occasional missed waterings.
