Overview

Monstera Thai Constellation is a tissue-cultured cultivar of Monstera deliciosa developed in a laboratory in Thailand. Its name comes from the creamy-yellow speckles dusted across the leaves like stars in a night sky.

Unlike the chimeric Monstera Albo, the Thai Constellation's variegation is genetically stable and more evenly distributed, so it rarely reverts to all green or all white. The variegation tends toward a softer cream/butter tone rather than stark white.

Because the variegated tissue photosynthesizes less, it grows slowly and stays expensive, but its stability and beauty make it one of the most desirable variegated houseplants.

How to identify it

Distinguishing features:

  • Classic fenestrated Monstera leaves dusted with creamy-yellow flecks and marbling spread fairly evenly
  • Variegation in a soft butter/cream tone rather than pure white
  • A speckled, 'galaxy' pattern rather than large half-moon blocks
  • Thicker, slightly textured leaves and slower growth than the green species
  • Stable variegation that seldom reverts fully

Care & growing

Same fundamentals as Monstera Deliciosa, with patience.

  • Light: Bright indirect light to support photosynthesis and keep variegation vibrant; avoid harsh direct sun
  • Water: Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil dries; never leave it soggy
  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix with bark and perlite
  • Temperature: Warm, 18 to 27 C (65 to 80 F); enjoys higher humidity
  • Feeding: Balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with a node; because variegation is stable, cuttings reliably keep it. Provide a moss pole for larger, more fenestrated leaves

Habitat & origin

Monstera Thai Constellation is a laboratory-created cultivar of Monstera deliciosa, which is native to the rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America. The cultivar does not exist in the wild.

It is mass-propagated by tissue culture and grown indoors by collectors and nurseries worldwide in warm, humid, brightly lit conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Thai Constellation and Albo?

Thai Constellation is a stable, lab-bred cultivar with even, creamy speckling that rarely reverts. Albo is a chimeric mutation with starker white half-moons that is unstable and can revert.

Will Thai Constellation revert to green?

Rarely. Its variegation is genetically stable, so unlike Albo it almost always keeps its speckled pattern, even from cuttings.

Why does it grow so slowly?

The cream variegated areas have less chlorophyll and photosynthesize less, so the whole plant grows more slowly than an all-green Monstera.
